National Flags Chosen by Popular Vote

Postby Banner » 01 Dec 2015 05:45

Reading about New Zealand's flag referendum got me wondering. How many national flags have been chosen by direct referendum or other popular vote? I think it must be incredibly rare. I can't think of another example. Most national flags are chosen by governments, can anyone think of one that was voted on by the population as a whole?

I have to say I can't think of one. Not even Canada had a referendum when they changed their flag, although they had colourful debates in Parliament. Fiji perhaps might chose a new flag by referendum but that hasn't happened yet.
