What flags could these be? Old black and white photo

Postby jazz » 19 May 2015 22:45

I have asked to colourise an old photo and I am looking for advice on what the flags are so that I can get the colours correct. The photo is dated 1886, location Wales and the event is the opening of a Constitutional Club. There are 10 flags in the photo. looks like numbers 1,2,4,5,7 and 9 are the standard union jack? I am lost what the other flags could be 3,6,8 and 10? Any ideas please?

I have added the photo and also a higher resolution link at http://zoomable.ca/view.php?i=flagshi

My guess is that number 8 is the Swiss flag.
Nos 6 and 10 are probably France and Italy (I suspect in that order, as the paler stripe in 10 probably is the green).

I'm afraid no. 3 is a mystery....

Interesting that there appears to be no Welsh flag.... !

Do you know which town this was? If so, there might be some hint from the town or county as to what flag 3 is.

Well, it doesn't look like the arms of Neath or Glamorgan.
I will have to give up on flag 3 I'm afraid.
Maybe some others on here have some ideas?

I think I've got no. 3!!

It's the Irish harp flag: green, with a golden winged harp. You can just see the "head" of the harp figure, and the raised wing reaching upwards and to the right up towards the finial of the flagpole.

Hope that helps!!

BTW, the Prince of Wales feathers on the left-hand shield are probably white on red with a gold coronet and the ribbon could be green or more likely the same gold as the coronet, and the shield on the right has the Marquess of Bute's main arms. These have a gold/yellow background, the double line border is red, and the bar across the middle is a chequered pattern of blue and white.

Thank you Meiriongwril your help is very much appreciated.
Any idea what the other plaque (shield) could be?

Sorry, missed your information regarding the right hand side shield. Is the image below correct?
